Tech at SOC, Bikes, Helmets, & Drivetrains-What You Need to Know

Words by Mia de Paula
The Sea Otter Classic 2025 has once again proven to be the launchpad for the latest and greatest in mountain biking. From cutting-edge bikes to next-gen helmets and technical apparel designed for women who shred, here’s a look at some of the standout tech making waves at this year’s event.

New Mountain Bikes Turning Heads

Specialized Turbo Levo Gen 4

With more power and improved range, the new Turbo Levo Gen 4 is a full-power eMTB that’s turning heads—and sparking conversation. It wasn’t just one of the most demoed bikes at Sea Otter Classic 2025…it was the talk of the festival.

Available in four builds, including the top-tier S-Works, the Levo 4 delivers some serious muscle for riders chasing steep climbs. It boasts a 101Nm Torque, 666W Power, 840Wh Battery on 3 builds and 111Nm on the S-Works. The bike also features an optional range extender, making it a dream for all-day trail missions.

But here’s where it gets spicy: the Levo 4 can be configured into a Class 3 e-bike—yes, up to 28mph. A rider can change this feature easily and quickly, on the handle bar controls. That’s exciting… and a little divisive. Some riders say it’s a revolutionary way to get to the trailhead faster and maximize ride time. Others worry it conflicts with public land policies and sets back broader eMTB advocacy efforts.
No matter where you land, one thing’s clear—this bike is packed with next-level tech, and honestly, I can’t wait to throw a leg over it.

Revel ReRun: A Mid-Power Marvel with CBF Confidence

Revel dropped a major first at Sea Otter Classic 2025 with the launch of the ReRun—their very first eMTB, and it’s already making noise.

This mid-power trail machine is powered by a Bosch SX motor, with the option of a range extender that effectively takes it into full-power territory. And it pairs seamlessly with the Bosch app for those who like to dial in data and ride feel.

But what really sets the ReRun apart? It’s the first eMTB to use Revel’s signature CBF (Canfield Balance Formula) suspension. That means it pedals incredibly efficiently while staying glued to the trail on descents—something CBF fans (like me) know and love.

Revel is offering two high-level builds, and everything about this bike—from geo to finish—we’ve heard, feels premium and playfully capable. I seriously can’t wait to ride this. First impressions and a full long-term review are coming soon—stay tuned!

Forbidden Druid Lite & Druid Core: Two New eMTBs Loaded with Tech

Forbidden came in hot at Sea Otter Classic with not one, but two new eMTBs: the Druid Lite and the Druid Core. These bikes are sleek, powerful, and packed with innovation.

Both models feature the new DJI Avinox M1 motor—delivering 120 Nm of torque and up to 1,000W of peak power! AND it’s still rated a Class 1 bike in the US. The Druid Lite runs 140/150mm of travel with a 600Wh battery, while the Druid Core steps it up to 150/160mm and an 1000Wh+ battery.

This motor and battery system is turning heads for good reason—it’s compact, high-tech, and fully integrated. The frame design and overall finish reflect Forbidden’s attention to detail and performance. Not to mention, the battery is the fastest charging on the market.

Honestly, this is the bike I’m most excited about. Fingers crossed I can get on one for a demo this fall!

Norco Sight VLT CX C1: Lighter, Faster, and Ready to Rip

Norco dropped the 2025 Sight VLT CX C1, now powered by the Bosch Performance Line CX motor and nearly 20% lighter than the previous generation. That means longer rides, quicker handling, and way more confidence on technical trails.

With 160mm front / 150mm rear travel and a high pivot suspension layout, we’re told this bike handles chunky terrain like a champ—without giving up that playful feel we love from the Sight line.

This one’s high on our list to test this fall—and we already know it’s going to be a fun one.

Honorable Mentions: More Bosch-Powered Bikes Making Wave

Several other bikes debuted at Sea Otter Classic 2025 running the Bosch Performance Line CX and SX motor, showing just how widespread and trusted this system has become.

1. Santa Cruz Vala – A sleek and versatile eMTB designed for all-day adventure, with Santa Cruz’s signature refinement, new suspension platform and clean lines.

2. Transition Regulator – Comes in both the CX and SX motor. The geometry, aggressive trail intentions, and Bosch power under the hood—built to go fast and hit hard.

3. Salsa Notch C Deore 12 – Salsa’s newest entry into the eMTB space brings utility and fun into one ride-anywhere, Bosch-powered platform.

4. Ibis Oso – A full-power e-enduro beast with a smooth feel and big travel, built around a DW-link suspension and now boasting Bosch power for 2025. It’s Ibis’s answer to high-performance eMTB needs—fast, planted, and ready to party.

5. Ari Timp Peak – A newcomer that turned heads, the Timp Peak blends sharp design with Bosch’s proven tech in a package that feels equally ready for long rides or rowdy descents. A fresh entry worth watching

Each of these bikes brings something a little different to the table, but they all share the same focus: capability, range, and trail-ready fun. We’ll be keeping our eyes on them for future ride reviews.

Helmet Tech That Stood Out at Sea Otter Classic 2025

POC Cularis – The Safest MTB Helmet on the Market

One of the biggest helmet standouts at Sea Otter Classic 2025 was the launch of the POC Cularis—a helmet already being called the safest mountain bike helmet on the market.

Designed from the ground up with multi-impact protection, rotational force mitigation, and optimized ventilation, the Cularis is the result of years of safety-focused R&D. It features MIPS Integra 2.0, a new multi-density liner, and an extended coverage profile—particularly in the rear and temple zones.

What really makes it shine is its rating. Independent safety labs have placed it at the top of impact protection across both high-speed and low-speed crashes—something rarely seen in MTB helmets.

It’s sleek, it’s highly breathable, comes in a variety of colours, and it doesn’t feel bulky despite the added protection. If you’re serious about safety and performance, the POC Cularis is absolutely one to watch. We’re hoping to get some ride time in it soon.

Fox Speedframe Lineup – Trail-Ready Protection, Three Ways

Fox brought the heat at Sea Otter Classic 2025 with an updated Speedframe helmet lineup, now available in three distinct versions: the Speedframe, Speedframe RS, and Speedframe Pro.

This trio covers a full range of trail riders—from those just getting into MTB to advanced enduro athletes looking for more tech and protection. All models feature extended rear coverage, deep ventilation channels, and adjustable visors for goggle compatibility.

-Speedframe – A solid, affordable option with clean styling and essential features.
-Speedframe RS – Adds a dial-fit system and upgraded MIPS for improved fit and rotational impact protection.
-Speedframe Pro – The top-tier model with dual-density EPS, MIPS Integra, and optimized comfort for big days in the saddle.

Each version keeps the Fox look we all know—bold, clean, and race-ready. Whether you’re upgrading or grabbing your first lid, this new lineup gives you real options at every price point.

Smith Hardline Carbon – The Lightest Carbon DH Helmet Out There

Smith turned heads at Sea Otter Classic 2025 with the Hardline Carbon, now the lightest DH-certified carbon full-face helmet on the market.

Designed for downhill, enduro, and freeride riders, it combines Koroyd impact zones, MIPS, and a sleek carbon shell. It’s ultra-protective without the bulk, with dialed venting and noticeable weight savings.

A solid win for smaller riders or anyone chasing full-face confidence with trail helmet comfort. We can’t wait to get it dirty.

Braking & Drivetrain Tech: TRP EVO Pro, Trail X, & Evo 12 Make a Statement

One of the more exciting behind-the-booth launches at Sea Otter Classic 2025 came from TRP, who introduced the all-new EVO Pro brake system. Designed for aggressive trail and enduro riders, the EVO Pro delivers massive power, refined modulation, and improved heat management thanks to a redesigned four-piston caliper and updated lever ergonomics.

Also on display was TRP’s new Trail X brake, a lighter, more minimalist option aimed at XC and trail riders who still want reliable bite without overkill. It features a smaller caliper and streamlined lever feel, while still holding its own under pressure. It’s a strong choice for those looking to upgrade from OEM setups without going full gravity.

Both systems reflect TRP’s continued evolution—and we’re excited to test them in the wild soon.

Also worth noting: TRP unveiled the EVO 12 drivetrain, their latest 12-speed system designed for seamless shifting under load. Built to pair perfectly with the new EVO Pro brakes, this groupset shows TRP’s commitment to becoming a full-system performance brand. Smooth, precise, and trail-tested—EVO 12 is one to watch.
