SMITH x Wild Rye Forefront 3 Helmet – Where Style Meets High-Tech Protection

Words by Candice Hansen

My first impression of the SMITH x Wild Rye Forefront 3 helmet?  Stylish, lightweight, and comfortable. It’s hard to find a mountain bike helmet that checks all the boxes like fit, safety, design—but this one absolutely delivers.

One of the biggest standouts of the SMITH x Wild Rye Forefront 3 is how comfortable it is…seriously. The flexible BOA fit system is a total game changer, and a feature I didn’t know I needed in a helmet.  It allows for micro-adjustments, creating a custom fit that feels like it was tailored for my head. I’ve noticed while on my longer trail rides the helmet stays secure without causing pressure points or hotspots.

Even with all the added safety tech, this helmet is surprisingly lightweight, and it doesn’t feel bulky on my head. Plus, the enhanced vents create airflow that keeps things cool—even on hot days, all in all making it a helmet you really enjoy wearing.

This helmet is loaded with thoughtful features designed for real trail use, including the adjustable visor. The visor helps block out harsh sun glare making it easier to focus on the trail ahead without squinting or constantly adjusting your sunglasses. You can tilt it up or down to dial in your line of sight, which is especially useful when you’re switching between shaded forests and wide-open terrain. Plus, it offers built-in sunglass storage on the front and rear, so your eyewear stays secure when you’re not wearing it.

Bold Design Meets Next-Level Safety

What sets the Forefront 3 helmet apart is its cutting-edge safety features. It’s built with Mips (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) and KOROYD technology, two major tools in helmet protection. Mips is designed to reduce rotational forces on the brain during angled impacts, while KOROYD’s crumple-zone tubes absorb any impact—giving you peace of mind when things get rowdy on the trail.

After experiencing a major crash that split my previous helmet in two, 2 years ago, I now prioritize these kinds of advanced protection systems giving me extra peace of mind every time I ride.

Features Riders Will Love

The SMITH x Wild Rye helmet –  packed with rider-friendly features:

A Collaboration Rooted with MTB History

What makes this helmet extra special is the story behind it. Cassie Abel, founder of Wild Rye, previously worked at SMITH back in 2012—where she helped launch the very first Forefront helmet. Fast forward to today, and she’s teamed up with SMITH again to create a fresh, female-forward collection that celebrates their shared history.

The SMITH x Wild Rye Forefront 3 features Wild Rye’s signature print,  bringing their fun spirit to the trails.  But there’s more! This collab includes an entire line of biking gear: shorts, glasses, hats, gloves, socks, and more. A collection designed for ladies who ride hard and love bold style.

All that to be said, it’s more than just a helmet, it’s a celebration of women in mountain biking and the evolution of gear built by and for women.   Explore the whole collection!
