A Trail Helmet That’s Climbing the Ranks (Literally)

Words by Mia de Paula:

I’ve tested a TON helmets since I started mountain biking over 10 years ago. Everything from Smith, Giro, POC, and Fox- This new POC Cularis helmet surprised me in the best way. I first saw it at Sea Otter Classic in April, and was so pleasently surprised to hear that it is rated one of, if not THE #1 safest mountain bike helmet on the market.

The POC Cularis MTB Helmet is, in fact, currently ranked number one across all categories of tested bike helmets in the Virginia Tech independent safety ratings, and honestly… it shows.

I’ve taken it on every type of ride; mellow spins, big climbs, and tech trails, including gravel rides, and the Cularis has held up through all of it. It’s low-profile, super breathable, and (finally) doesn’t make me look like a mushroom in ride photos.

First Impressions:

  • Fit was spot on right out of the box (Size Small)
  • Lightweight but doesn’t feel flimsy.
  • Clean, modern design that actually looks good with a braid or ponytail.
  • Straps and dial system are easy to adjust, even mid-ride.

Real-World Riding Feel: Comfortable and Dialed

From the first ride, the Cularis felt secure but not constricting. It hugs your head just right without creating pressure points, something I love from all POC helmets. I have a smaller head, and the size Small actually felt made for me. No shifting on chunky descents, no awkward slipping when I sweat.

The ventilation is legit. There are large vents in the front and throughout the top and back, and on hotter days I actually felt air moving through it. It’s honestly one of the most breathable helmets I’ve ever worn. POC claims the purpose of the vents and the shape of the helmet is for for efficient ventilation and effective airflow, keeping you cooler for longer.

BUT… The trade off…. Those big vents in front leave your scalp pretty exposed—I’ve started wearing a lightweight headband on longer rides so I don’t get a weird sunburn pattern.

The Cularis also comes in 9 different colours, so there’s plenty of options to choose from!

Tech Features That Matter

Let’s get into the nerdy stuff—because this helmet is more than just pretty.

  1. Mis Air Node- The Mips Air Node module is integrated with the helmet’s comfort padding and offers enhanced rotational impact protection.
  2. Fidlock® Magnetic Buckle- This might sound small, but the Fidlock buckle is a game changer for me. One-handed, glove-friendly, and clicks into place like magic. I didn’t realize how annoying traditional buckles were until I didn’t have to fiddle with them anymore.
  3. Adjustable 360 Fit System- The dial in the back gives you micro-adjustments so you can really fine-tune the fit. And once it’s dialed in, it stays. I’ve taken this on techy terrain and fast flow trails, and it never budged.
  4. Eye Garage for Glasses- There’s a dedicated spot to stash your shades—no more dropping them in the dirt when you stop to breathe or grab a snack. I’ve used it a ton when I switch between sunglasses and goggles mid-ride.
  5. Patented Breakaway Peak- The helmet peak will snap off in a crass to enhance neck protection and reduce the chance of injury.
  6. Extended Coverage- The rear coverage is solid without making it look like a full enduro lid. It’s low-profile, but still offers that extra protection we all want for unexpected tumbles.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Top-ranked safety score from Virginia Tech
  • Breathable—like actually breathable
  • Fidlock buckle is easy, secure, and kind of addictive
  • Fits a variety of head shapes without awkward pressure points
  • Lightweight and low-profile without compromising protection
  • Eye garage is super useful for on-the-fly gear switches
  • Color options that don’t scream “dude helmet”

Cons:

  • Big front vents = sunburn risk on your scalp and forehead
  • Visor isn’t adjustable
  • Pricey—definitely an investment-level helmet

Final Thoughts

The POC Cularis has become my default helmet, and honestly, that says a lot. I’ve tried plenty that were “fine,” but this one checks nearly every box—comfort, safety, style, and smart design. Plus, I’ve gotten compliments on it more than once, which has never happened with a helmet before.

But the biggest thing for me though, is knowing this is the top-rated helmet for safety by Virginia Tech makes me feel genuinely comfortable and secure every time I ride. That confidence is something you can’t really put a price on.

Again, my one concern is getting sunburnt on the top of my forehead…. But I’ve figured out how to curb that!

If you’re looking for a high-performance trail helmet that doesn’t compromise on fit or function—and you want something that leads in safety—the Cularis deserves a spot at the top of your list.

Even with the little sunburn thing, I’d buy this again. And I don’t say that lightly.
