Big Upgrades Coming to Sudbury’s Trail Network in Northern Ontario
Sudbury, Ontario, may not boast massive descents, but what it lacks in elevation it makes up for in sheer technical challenge. Known for its rugged rock slabs and unforgiving terrain, this northern MTB hotspot delivers a unique riding experience that pushes even the most seasoned riders. At the center of the action is Kivi Park, home to nearly 100 km of multi-use trails for mountain biking, adaptive biking, hiking, Nordic skiing, and fat biking. While earlier trail designs received mixed reviews, a major revamp is now in full swing. Backed by a $256,500 grant from FedNor (Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario), the trail system is undergoing a multi-phase upgrade from 2024 to 2026. The plan includes redesigning 21 km of existing trails, improving overall flow with new connectors, and adding 3 km of advanced, technical routes. Redesign work is set to wrap by 2025, with new trail builds breaking ground in 2026. With these improvements, Sudbury is dialing in a more cohesive, challenging, and rider-approved MTB experience in the heart of Northern Ontario.
